ELSNIT - Euro-Latin Study Network on Integration and Trade

ELSNIT, October 19-20, 2012 Bocconi University

ELSNIT is the acronym of Euro-Latin Study Network on Integration and Trade. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), through its Special Office in Europe (ORP-EUR), the Institute for the Integration of Latin America and the Caribbean -INTAL- in Buenos Aires and the Integration and Trade Sector, launched the Euro-Latin Study Network on Integration and Trade (ELSNIT). This initiative creates a forum in Europe on regional integration and trade issues relevant to Latin America and the Caribbean. The main objectives of the Network are to generate research, studies and debate on these issues; draw on the rich European experience; and increase interaction between European and Latin American researchers. ELSNIT is coordinated by a Steering Committee that currently consists of the Centre d'Etudes Prospectives et d'Informations Internationales (CEPII), Paris, France; the Kiel Institute for World Economics (IfW), Kiel, Germany; the European University Institute (EUI), Florence, Italy; the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI), Barcelona, Spain; the University of St. Gallen, St. Gallen, Switzerland; KITeS-Bocconi University, Milan,Italy; the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), London, United Kingdom, and the IDB (represented by INT and INTAL).

Every year ELSNIT organizes a meeting based on a call for papers (see: http://www.iadb.org/en/intal/euro-latin-study-network-on-integration-and-trade-elsnit,7158.html). The meeting is thematic and each year the theme changes. Both theoretical and empirical contributions are considered, but in all cases priority is given to papers identifying and shedding light on relevant policy questions such as those outlined under the chosen theme, including case studies of policies followed by national or international organizations, in particular. Furthermore, submission of papers that, in doing this, explicitly contrast successful and failed cases, comparing countries and/or geographical area, is strongly encouraged. Important lessons are expected to be drawn from these contributions for Latin American and Caribbean countries.

The ELSNIT conference starts on Friday morning and finishes on Saturday around lunchtime, i.e., it is essentially a one day and a half event. There is also the coordinators meeting on Saturday at lunch. The number of participants (i.e. presenters, discussants, panelists, and members of the steering committee) is approximately 25
